ActNow BC was announced in September 2004 as a cross-government health promotion initiative, meant to help improve the health and lives of British Columbians by taking steps to address common risk factors and reduce chronic disease. As a multi-year, partnership-based government platform, ActNow BC continues to support schools, employers, local governments and communities by developing and promoting programs that make healthy choices easy for all British Columbians.

The Challenge

When ActNow BC approached Backbone Technology, the organization was still in its concept stages and had no clear vision, logo, branding or any creative materials to spread the word about the initiative. Additionally, the organization was in need of an organic, adaptable website that could be maintained by its staff without outside assistance. To top it off, the site was to go live in just one month.

The Solution

To expedite the development process, Backbone set up Expression as a project work environment that allowed stakeholders to critique the site and suggest changes as the project progressed. This continuous input allowed the development of a fully-functioning website with complete branding in a fraction of the time that a project of this magnitude would normally require.

Expression also became the development platform that empowered ActNow BC staff to produce content and upload it in real time, regardless of their professional or technical background. With minimal training, users were able to create content-rich articles and advanced site architectures with ease.

The Result

The ActNow BC website was launched on schedule with new content being added by ActNow BC staff regularly. Today, ActNow BC staff and a growing number of external contributors maintain the site with complete independence thanks to Expression's ability to scale itself to meet growing needs. This sustained independence has translated directly into money saved‚ money which the initiative can now put towards new ways of promoting a healthy lifestyle.
