> The Client:
The BC Liberal Party is the current governing political party of British Columbia. Once affiliated with its federal counterpart – the Liberal Party of Canada – the BC Liberals have been independent since the late 1980s.

> The Challenge:
The BC Liberals had originally engaged Backbone in 2001 to develop an internal private intranet that would manage the business of the party executive. However, when the party saw how Expression simplified their internal management, Backbone was engaged to deliver similar functionality for their public website.

At the time, the current public website had fallen into disrepair due mostly to the fact that it was difficult and expensive to keep up to date. What they needed was a system that empowered its staff to update content on the main party website – and all regional riding sites – while still offering extensive scalability to continually meet the party's growing needs.

> The Solution:
A single instance of Expression became the unified administrative interface for the main party website as well as the party's 49 regional sites. This gave staff at party headquarters centralized administrative control while also streamlining information sharing between the sites.

BCLTV allows the BC Liberals to stream media in any format

Using Expression's fine-grained access control levels, Backbone gave regional staff access only to their own riding site with an interface customized to their specific tasks. This regional control allowed administrative duties to be delegated without the risk of accidental changes affecting the main party website or any of the other regional sites.

Meanwhile, Expression also acted as a development framework that allowed Backbone to build crucial components such as the BCLTV media player and the Online Store. The former allows contributors to upload video in any format and then stream it through a custom Flash video player. The latter allows the party to sell party paraphernalia and accept donations online with all transactions tracked and managed by Expression.

> The Result:
Expression's ability to handle a limitless number of domains enabled Backbone to launch the main party website and all of the party's regional sites simultaneously and on schedule. Then, when it came time for the 2005 and 2009 provincial elections, Expression's advanced template system allowed for the rapid re-branding of all sites within a compressed time frame.

Years later, this system is still in use. As the site has grown, Expression has grown alongside it. Expression's flexibility and scalability, along with Backbone's dedication and foresight, have ensured that even a solution as large and complex as this can be completely "future-proof".
